Junior Music Course (JMC) for ages 4-5

Junior Music Course (JMC) is 2 year program for children beginning at ages 4 or 5 that provides an incomparable foundation for future musical study on any instrument. Children learn basic musical skills such as singing, music reading and writing, playing the keyboard, ear training, and creating music.

Classes meet once a week for 50 minutes, including a 10-miute period for homework and class announcements. Class sizes vary, however, the preferred class size is between 8 and 10 students.

To enroll in JMC, children must have reached their 4th birthday by September 1 for fall semester classes and by February 15th for a spring semester start. This requirement helps ensure that children are enrolled in a course for which they are developmentally ready.

JMC students are taught a comprehensive curriculum that includes ear-training using solfege, rhythm and notation, music appreciation, creativity, and singing of the various musical styles. Each activity is specifically designed to be dynamic and timed to meet the attention span of 4-5 year olds. Yamaha course books, CDs, DVDs, and the musical laptop bring color and life to make sophisticated musical concepts fun and approachable for young kids.

We ask that one parent attends with each child.  This format motivates children and allows them to develop ensemble skills and cooperation within a supportive community of friends and parents. When parents actively participate in their child’s music lessons and home practice, they can together cultivate a life-long love for music.
